Green Inhaler
A breath of fresh air
Promoting greener healthcare
Unlike standard inhalers, green inhalers don’t use CO2 to deliver medication. Working with Greater Manchester Integrated Care Partnership, the campaign was aimed at inhaler users to raise awareness of the greener options available.
Challenge
The NHS is one of the largest employers in the world, contributing to 5% of the UK’s overall carbon footprint. Within this, 3% of all carbon emissions are created by inhalers.
A green inhaler can produce 25 times less CO2 than the most prescribed inhaler, yet it can produce the same desired outcome. Our main objective was to communicate, inform, educate, and change mindset, ensuring those suitable for a Green Inhaler are made aware of and offered the greener alternative.
Collaborate
To tackle this, we worked closely with GPs and healthcare professionals, informing them of the benefits of Green Inhalers on the environment and the positive feedback we have received from early adopters.
We needed to change the mindset of patients and GPs, assuring those who qualify that the inhaler is just as effective, easy to use and would not affect their routine or health condition.
Create
Our findings suggested that the efficacy of an inhaler is the most critical factor when deciding whether to switch.
For patients, ensuring there isn’t a disruption to their routine, the inhaler is as effective as their current solution, and there is an option to switch back to help ease concern. We developed the “find a greener inhaler to suit you” campaign, highlighting that the switch from a traditional inhaler to a greener, more environmentally friendly alternative.
Change
To help establish a better understanding of Green Inhalers, we conducted two social media campaigns; the first targeted the patients and the second targeted GPs and Health Professionals.
We ran a 4-week sponsored Facebook campaign to target patients, resulting in over 330,000 impressions. For GPs and Health Professionals, we conducted a LinkedIn campaign linked to a green inhaler digital pack that provided the reader with further information. We received nearly 10,000 impressions, and 130 link clicks to the digital pack.
