Thriving communities
Help TafoTrust is a Scottish charity started in 2002 by Fiona Johnston, who bought land in Ghana to build a nursery and primary school. Helping bring education to hardworking, bright children from the most impoverished outlying villages of Tafo. They are a non-profit making, non-political, and non-religious charity, operating to provide quality education to help build brighter futures for local children.
Challenge
Charities are almost four times more likely to identify funding issues as the most pressing issue facing their organisation than any other year-on-year.
Our challenge was to tell the heartwarming and unique story of the Help Tafo Trust Charity and raise awareness of the commitment to their school and the education of children in Ghana. It’s hard to imagine how important it is to the lives of pupils and their families.
Collaborate
We got together with Basil and discussed the most pressing issues for the charity and agreed they needed a new logo and an updated website.
To help make the process of donating funds easier and aid communication about the progress of the pupils and the expansion of the school — to enhance the education facilities.
Create
We created a new website to generate much-needed funds to help change the lives of children through education. Inspired by the colours, culture, and heritage of Ghana along with a little nod to Scotland.
It tells the stories of pupils’ lives and how the school makes a positive difference to their futures. We received letters and drawings from pupils thanking us for their ‘beautiful new website’. It’s true what they say — a little change can mean a lot.
Change
Ghana is viewed by many as a beacon in Africa's struggle towards democracy. The Juliet Johnston School opened in 2003 with 49 children and just 5 classrooms. Now the school has over 300 children from 3 to 18 years old and now has 15 classrooms, a library and rudimentary computer room, a new kitchen, and a sports field.
C21 has so far donated a total of £20,000 which included funding for a school bus and a well-drilling so that the children – and the village – have access to clean water in the school. It also helped supply new furniture and carpets for two nursery classes and 11 teachers with work mobile phones, so they can be trained via WhatsApp.
Our donations have also paid for a pupil’s prosthetic limb. Gifty Asiedua had an operation to straighten her leg, but the operation went wrong and they sadly had to amputate.
It’s been a huge pleasure to create the new website for Help Tafo Trust. The children’s stories really touched our hearts. We’re proud to help and support such a great cause and the brilliant work being done by Basil, Juliet and all the staff of the Juliet Johnston School.
